- What is Consecutive Interpreting?
Consecutive interpreting is the oral translation of longer sections of a speech with a time delay, mostly using notes (with a special notation technique), after the original text has been presented. The number of consecutive interpreters needed depends on the complexity and length of the assignment.
- What are typical assignments for Consecutive Interpreters?
Consecutive interpreters are used at dinner speeches and welcome addresses, bilateral negotiations, ceremonial occasions (speeches at festivals), presentations, guided tours etc. Given that the interpretation is delayed, you need to schedule around twice as much time compared to simultaneous interpreting.
- What to pay attention to when it comes to Consecutive Interpreting
Just as with simultaneous interpreting, preparation is key for a successful consecutive interpreting assignment. Timely planning and submitting preparatory documents to the interpreters at an early stage is recommended. When on site, interpreters should be able to have eye contact with and be within earshot of the speaker. Allow for regular breaks and set up a chair and a table which the interpreter can use for note-taking. Bear in mind the positioning of the interpreter as well as that of speakers and microphones when planning your set-up. If your event extends beyond a certain time frame, or for extra flexibility, you might want to hire a second consecutive interpreter.
- How much does it cost?
For conference interpreting, prices are guided by standard interpreting fees (usually charged per conference day) and also depend on various factors such as the duration and type of assignment (specialist field, subject and intensity of preparation, audience, language combination). Additional fees may also apply.
- Costs for conference equipment (sound system, microphones, technical support)
- Depending on the place of assignment: Travel and accommodation costs
- For larger teams: Costs for project and team management
- Necessary additional services: translation of meeting documents and conference materials (e.g., brochures, videos, documentation, show interludes)
- Utilisation fees for the use of image and sound recordings and streaming
